An Odia wedding is no less than a festival. The Odia wedding rituals are enriched with the classical melodies of the state, vibrant attires, beautifying decorations, and delicious cuisines. The wedding speaks highly of the rich culture, traditions, rituals, and family bonds people share in the state. Usually, these weddings are set up according to Vedic Hindu rituals, in which only Utkala Brahmins have their weddings during the daytime, mostly in the morning, while the other Odia castes have their nuptials in the evening or at night.
Like many Indian weddings, the elders of both families do the arrangement, incorporating their traditions and values. Mutual acceptance of both partners is also very important. The families officially meet once the horoscope matches(the better the match, the happier the couple). The marriage includes three major rituals.
The first is Nirbandha (the engagement ceremony); the life partners-to-be is generally absent; their families exchange Sankalpa (word of mouth) and gifts at a sacred place. The second is the Bahaghara (wedding ceremony), where the parents of both sides refrain from seeing this ceremony as it is considered to bring bad luck to the partners.
The third is Chauthi (consummation); a Pooja is performed on the fourth day, in which a coconut is roasted and fed to the couple, and their room is also decorated beautifully with many flowers and diyas (lamps). According to the traditions of Odisha, marriage is only considered to be done after consummation.
Apart from these many more rituals are performed at the wedding such as Mangana (haldi ceremony), Mehndi (henna application), Kanyadaan, and other pujas to gain blessings from God and the ancestors. Also, many people in Odia believe in horoscopes and lucky dates for marriage. It is a very important aspect of their lives. Nonetheless, we know that it can be very time-consuming for one to perform all these duties. And to help you have your perfect destination wedding, here are auspicious Odisha wedding dates for 2024.
