For most people, travel is a means to enjoy or de-stress from work. For others, it is a source of earning like travel influencers. Traveling always serves one kind of purpose or another and it can never be mindless.
Nowadays, there’s a new kind of traveling, one that serves a very intrinsic purpose, which is transformative travel. Transformative traveling has been gaining popularity for seasoned travellers who now look for experiences beyond average tourism. It is a step further from experiential travel, which allows people to connect with their travel destinations. It’s more than being just a visitor, it is about conscientiously opening yourself to travel experiences that will change you.
One purpose for transformative travel can be connecting to your place of origin. As a Mexican American, I would suggest everyone sharing the same background as I to visit Mexico at least once in their life. You can make the most of this trip by making it a transformative one.
You should take this chance to reconnect with your roots and immerse yourself in the authentic Mexican experience. In this blog, I am listing three major reasons why you should take a trip to Mexico, as a Mexican American.
Mexico is a country rich in history. From its Aztec origins to the colonial conquest and subsequent wars, there is a lot to learn from how Mexicans struggled and fought to keep their identity. The history course in high school does not even scratch the surface of the colossal history that is a part of the Mexican heritage now. Mexico proudly flaunts that history in its streets, museums, etc., and the best part? It is very cheap, almost free.
You can get on a journey through time and visit the colonial town of Guanajuato. It is a perfect place to immerse yourself in culture-rich streets and colorful buildings. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the town flaunts the most stunning examples of Baroque architecture.
Furthermore, the Metropolitan Cathedral in Mexico City still bears the cultural influences of its colonizers. It is an artful blend of Baroque, Neoclassical and Gothic architectures. If you are one for nature, then you take a stroll in El Parque de Chapultepec and immerse yourself in the stunning exhibits of Mexican culture. You can also walk the streets of Centro Historico and read the plaques displayed outside the houses that detail the history of their inhabitants.
Lastly, to walk yourself through Mexico’s past, I would recommend constantly reading from the sources on the internet about the place you are visiting in Mexico. This will provide a well-rounded historical view which will make you feel a deep connection with your roots. I would switch on my Xfinity mobile’s data roaming to avoid using public WiFi. To get a good deal, you can call numero de Xfinity and get uninterrupted data.
I am sure you grew up eating a lot of Mexican food that was authentic, but nothing screams for authentic than the native country. Mexico has a lot to offer in terms of culinary experiences. Flavors and textures are an immersive way to experience your culture and heritage. To make my point even stronger, Mexican Cuisine made it to the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Mexican food contains the cultural ethos of its centuries-old cooking techniques, farming, and even ancestral recipes that can really elevate your transformative travel.
You will surprised to discover how Mexican food goes beyond the usual tacos, burritos, etc. Each Mexican region proudly flaunts its special dishes, with diverse cooking methods and ingredients. You can try the iconic seafood in Oaxaca, elevated with its indigenous flavors. The variations of tacos like tacos de suadero and tacos de canasta are going to blow you away.
Don’t forget to try tamales, atole, huaraches, gorditas, and mole from the street food vendors for the most authentic taste. Trying these foods while standing in the hot, humid streets of Mexico that makes is an unforgettable experience.
Mexico’s diverse landscapes are known for their breathtaking views. From tropical climates and sunlit beaches to snow-capped peaks, Mexico’s landscape greatly varies across its latitude. It is a country that has it all. The regions touching the Caribbean Ocean are perfect for summer travelers and beach persons. The Montaña of the Sierra Madre range are perfect for travelers seeking an escape from the hot winters.
Additionally, Tulum has picturesque beaches with light sands and turquoise waters that will make you feel like you are inside the cover of a travel magazine. You can bathe in the sun or go snorkeling to interact with the sea life of the Caribbean Ocean. The Lacandon Jungle in the Chiapas region of Mexico is a rainforest, which will provide a different yet immersive experience to you. It is also the home to two Mayan ruins, Yaxchilan and Bonampak.
Lastly, Mexico is also famous for its incredible biodiversity. It houses roughly 10% to 12% of the various species found around the planet. It has 864 species of reptiles, out of which 45% can only be found in Mexico. Therefore, Mexico has the perfect blend of climate and biodiversity, which provides a variety of options for you to choose from and gain a transformative experience.
Mexico is a diverse country, filled with a range of foods, historical richness, and varying natural landscapes. By visiting Mexico, you can get a variety of experiences that will make you form a deeper connection to the country of your origin. These experiences will transform you and you will return to US as an evolved person.
